SHARING – HEALING – HELPING
Share your story to help both you and others to heal
In my book and blogs, I often talk about how telling your story can help you to heal. There is something very therapeutic in the act of sharing your story. As I say, you heal just a little bit every time you tell your story. The more you do it, the more you heal.
It is incremental steps, not big grand steps. But you begin to realize the progress over time… and you begin to feel a little more whole again with each step. It takes bravery and commitment to tell these stories. You will find that by sharing you also build stronger relationships with those who are willing to hear you.
We as men are not hardwired to share our stories and feelings with others. But if you do not, you are likely to remain isolated and hurting… and this can become self-feeding and lead to further isolation and pain.
What you might share…
When you do feel up to sharing, you may include your memories about:
the how and why of your wife’s passing,
when and how you met her and fell in love,
how she made your life better,
how she lived and loved others,
why she was such a special person, and
how you are coping with her being gone.
If you just bottle this all up inside and never share it you are doing her a disservice. By sharing her with others, you are remembering, honoring, and loving her. By doing this, you heal yourself of the grief, anger, regrets, and doubts that are a normal part of the experience after her death.
You can also help others to heal by sharing your story
Every time a new widower hears our story, he realizes that what he is experiencing is normal. He realizes that he is not alone and that he is NOT going crazy. And he realizes that he too can heal, and maybe even enjoy life again.
So, please, please help me to help other widowers, especially new widowers. Go to my website (shown below) and share your story with me so I can share it with my readers on my website, facebook page, collaborative partners (Widowers Support Network and National Widowers Organization). Together we can help our fellow widowers.
